I called myself Wilks when I first started blogging, probably with the idea that it would afford a measure of anonymity and, for much the same reason, there was no photo. Times change, hence the photo, but I decided that even when I changed the blog’s title at the start of 2009, I will remain Wilks: a lawyer, historian, birder, naturalist, and enthusiast.
For the past 13 years, Caroline and I have lived on the north east edge of Dartmoor, which we can see from the top floor of the house, but on which we never seem to spend enough time. As well as home, this is the part of England I love the most. I started blogging with Dartmoor Letters, on which I still post: a record of the places we have walked, the birds we have seen and the countryside of which we never tire.
My day job is law. I am a partner in a leading South West law firm, specialising in corporate transactional work. I also hold a number of South West non-executive directorships and trusteeships, and through them have become involved in the wider business community. At the same time, I am involved in both teaching and thinking about professional conduct and legal ethics, and their relationship with the real world of day to day law for some years: this is the focus of my blog Lawslot Redux. Finally, I continue to speak at seminars and workshops on risk and risk management, professional conduct and conflicts of interest, entrepreneurship and enterprise.
